ACCESSING YOUR PATIENT INFORMATION “ON-LINE”

Palms of Pasadena Hospital converted to a new hospitalwide information system in August 2000. This Clinical Browser system has the capability of providing clinical information, such as Lab and Radiology results, along with demographic information, on your in- and out-patients using Internet-browser technology.

Access to the HBOC Clinical Browser is established through the Medical Staff Office. Each physician requesting access to this patient information must complete and return a "Data Security and Confidentiality” form. In addition, members of the physician’s office staff may also be approved to access patient information on their patients (security forms must also be signed by each office staff member).

Once the signed security forms have been returned, individual User I.D.s and passwords will be assigned to each person, and training on how to access their patient information will take place. Access can be accomplished at one of the many computer terminals within the hospital or via the Internet by utilizing the Medicity website (www.medicity.com). By accessing the Clinical Browser via Medicity, physicians and their staff are able to conveniently view patient results and demographics over the Internet from their office or home.

In addition, the Medicity website has additional online features to help physicians with both clinical and office duties, such as:

• As a Medicity member, you are automatically registered for a secure E-mail account for free e-mail services.
• A prioritized messaging system and online calendar allows physicians to post messages and important events for their colleagues and staff — plus view important messages from Palms of Pasadena Hospital.
• The document center allows physicians to store and share electronic documents such as commonly used forms, policies, and patient handouts used in their practice.
• Medicity provides a driving directions feature and general news updates, as well as selected online journal abstracts.
• An online drug reference provides quick and complete information on the latest prescription medications.

PHYSICIAN ORIENTATION

Below are highlights about various physician services at Palms of Pasadena Hospital:

• Physician Parking -- There are two doctors’ parking areas at Palms -- one on the ground floor of the parking garage and a lot immediately to the left of the main entrance of the hospital. Parking stickers are required for all individuals parking on the hospital premises. Physicians are requested to contact the Medical Staff Office at 341-7750 to obtain a Palms’ parking permit for their car.
• Physician Dining – A separate doctors’ dining room is available for all Medical Staff members in our Medical Library.
• Health Talk Series -- Physicians interested in giving community lectures at Palms should contact our Director of Community Relations at 344-3128 (Phone) or 529-0297 (Beeper).
• Grand Rounds CME Programs – Palms of Pasadena Hospital holds weekly CME programs for members of its medical staff. These lectures are held every Thursday from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 p.m. in the Pasadena Room of the Hospital; lunch is provided at these conferences. Category I CME credit hours are obtained through the University of South Florida Office of Professional Education in Tampa, FL, for each program. Physicians wishing to present an educational topic at a Thursday Grand Rounds should contact Holly Jones in the Medical Staff Office at 341-7794 to schedule a lecture.
• Patient Representative -- Palms’ Patient Representative (ext. 7704) and the Director of Risk Management (ext. 7747) are available to assist with patient and family concerns involving Hospital services.
• Ethics Consultations -- Palms’ Ethics Committee is a standing committee of the medical staff which meets periodically to review policies and procedures, formulate ethical guidelines, provide educational offerings to Committee members and the medical staff, and discuss case consultations. The Ethics Advisory Committee, made up of any three members of the full Ethics Committee, functions as a mechanism for prompt response to requests for ethics consultations.
• Any medical staff member may order an ethics consult, either by contacting the Director of Risk Management (ext. 7747) or by written or verbal order. Ethics consults are useful in resolving disagreements between the physician and patient/family as to what is in the patient’s best interest, or when there is no apparent conflict involved but there are serious ethical issues to be considered (i.e., withdrawal or withholding of life-sustaining treatment, DNR orders, etc.). An ethics consult can also help facilitate communication with primary decision makers when the patient lacks decision-making capacity. An ethics consult is advisory only and not binding on the physician.
